Purpose
When 24/7 Wall St. published an article in 2019 called The Worst Cities for Black Americans, the results couldn’t have been more bleak for our community. Referencing significant inequalities in income, employment, home ownership, and incarceration rates, it rated Waterloo & Cedar Falls as the worst place for Black Americans to live.
While for many of us these problems were far from new, seeing them spelled out in black and white sparked an urgency that things must change, starting now.
Turns out, there were many of us determined to see our community become a place where everyone could thrive and tired of waiting on someone else to make it happen. As a result, the 501(c)(3) called 24/7 Black Leadership Advancement Consortium (BLAC) was formed.

24/7 BLAC aims to increase personal and professional development, amplify leadership and growth strategies, and build networks of influence for professionals in Waterloo and Cedar Falls with an emphasis on the Black community. As a collective, we help unemployed and underemployed black professionals develop professional skills while connecting them with employment opportunities. Many of these opportunities are with 24/7 BLAC partners who are committed to diversifying their workforce and increasing the number of black managers and leaders in local companies.
24/7 BLAC has been honored with national recognition as well as the USASBE award and the Grow Cedar Valley Betty Wubenna Partnership award.
The significant impact our organization is having on individuals and our community at large has not only garnered remarkable attention but also inspired other communities to begin modeling programs after it. We hope the momentum is only just beginning!
